- I hate it when a rule or law is put in place because one person did something stupid. That's all it takes. If one person overdosed on mayonaisse, by eating 2 gallons in a day, there would be an intestigation into how much mayonnaise is too much. Then there would be warning labels on every jar of Hellmans. The latest instance of this garbage comes from Illinois. Someone was hit by a train while texting. Now the Illinois state legislature is reviewing a bill that would ban the use of all wireless devices on streets. This includes talking on the phone. That's what they're made for - talking on the street. I can't believe we're blaming the phones instead of the people who use them. The phone didn't kill this girl. It's tragic, but it was her fault. One of the fundamental rules in life is, "Watch out for trains." Always. Always make sure a train isn't about to hit you. If one is, then move. They hurt. Bad.
Important things:
1. Eat vegetables.
2. Sleep.
3. Watch out for trains.
If they want to pass a law because of this, my girlfriend pointed out, why not pass a law stating that train conductors have to watch for people on phones? That makes just as much sense.
Don't be stupid. That's it. No law needed.
You may recall me writing in November about an apartment scam in Hoboken. I found another on Craigslist and decided to bait him, in the same way the previous guy baited me. The emails start tame, but I'm getting crazy with it at the end. Here is the transcript thus far.
Hi. Is this still available? I lived in Hoboken for a year, and moved to JC Heights several months ago. I'm looking to return to Hoboken.

Pets are allowed. This is not a share or something, the whole apartment is for rent and the price per month is $1,600. I am asking for 2 month's rent payment plus 1/2 month as security deposit, the 2 months are for the first and last and the deposit will be returned at the end of the lease. I don't know how else to do this since i have noone there who i might send the keys to and show you the apartment and i am the only one who has the keys, so, if you want to see the apartment i would need your address where the keys to be fedex-overnight to you and we will talk about the payment process for the $4,000 and about the other details after viewing, if there is somethig else that you want to know please feel free to ask.

Good Morning, Mrs. Tobor. This place sounds fantastic. I have a question regarding pets. You say that pets are okay. I have a pet that might be a little illegal. Is that okay? It's very calm. Between you and I, it's a pygmy white rhino. It is soooo cute. Anyway, it's basically like a dog.
Also, I'm a big jogger, but I like jogging in short spurts. I run 4-6 miles per day, but I do so in 100 ft increments. I run 100 feet, then stop for a few minutes. Sometimes I'll drink tea. But not always. Is there a 100 ft straightaway in the apartment? Please say yes!!!!
You can send the keys. I live next door at 549 Observer, Apt 4. I know the management at 551. Would it be possible to send them the keys? They're nice people who would definitely accommodate this transaction. I'm really looking forward to seeing the place.

hey, I just exchanged pretty much the exact same emails with this person (minus the pigmy rhino, of course!). what a jerk! i'm thinking of telling the police & craig's list.
So I email this person about a listing in Stamford and decide to google their email address bc the deal sounded to good. I wondered why someone with an email name Jurich, would respond with my name is Katrina Albert...? Apparently from this blog, this person tried to pull the same scam in Chicago. Well they are doing it in Stamford now too. See below...
Not to mention that a place like this in stamford would go for about 2k.

Hi, I just saw the same add on craigslist and inquired myself. Have either of you been in contact with 'Karina' at all? 'Karina' seems to copy and paste that response. If you havent been in contact with 'Karina' I suggest one of us reports this to craigslist and see what they say. This is horrible. Please let me know so that one of us can move forward.
I've received the same emails from "Karina" about the Stamford apartment rental. Verbatim. Sounds like the same scammer. If it sounds too good to be true...

My fiancee has been dealing with this person too. We saw the apt for rent here in Stamford. She's received carbon-copies of the email that other have received, so either this person is really stupid, lazy or both. Thanks to everyone on here for verifying our skepticism and doubts about this idiot.

I would like you to show good faith that you have the money and that you are a serios tenant and my proposal for you is to wire the $3,000 to a familly mamber or to a friend of yours via money gram, then e-mail me the receipt that money gram will give you to see it myself and to get a confirmation from money gram that the transaction took place and that indeed the money is there on your friends/relatives name, i would feel more comfortable knowing that you have the money and you are a serious tenant. After i get the confirmation from money gram you can take your money back from them and i will fly out to CT to meet you and show you the apartment myself and if you like it to make the lease etc etc. When you make the money gram transfer deduct the fees from the $3,000. We will meet there and show you the apartment, if you don't like it i will give you the money for the money gram fees back. If you like the apartment you pay me, we sign the lease, i will let the keys to you and you can move there.

P.S. Maybe you don't know what money gram is, money gram is the fastest way to send money all over the world and they have 1000s of agencies all over the world. You have to know that for making a money gram transfer you need cash and to go in person with the cash to a money gram location and make the transfer, you have to have your IDs with you. That's why i choose money gram and i think that this is best to make proof of funds in my opinion.
I already thought it was a scam cause the price was not reall for stamford but I was interested how far it can go so I asked for phone number again at as a respond I got this:
Please first make the money gram and the if everything is ok i will call you before i book a flight ticket.
So far it was my last email. I hope this blog will help somebody to not believe this person, and nobody will send any money.

Just to let you know: 1 month ago i "found" a tenant who was "convinced" that he will rent my apartment, so, i took the next plain and i flew to show him the apartment, when he saw me there, i guess he took advantage that i flown such a long distance to show him the apartment and he tried to negociate with me and finaly i ended up not renting, i have a job here and i can't live work for more than 3 days. So, i had to come back and nor rented my apartment. I want to avoid that i don't trust anyone until i don't see that the funds exists. No offence.
The ball is in your court, think, i didn't ask you to send me the mney, all i have asked is to deposit the funds to someone you know, send me the receipt, i verify with money gram, if they confirm that the funds is there i will fly over and show you the apartment.
